With a rich publishing tradition dating back to 1642, today's Maltese literature thrives through a diverse ecosystem of publishers, authors, and cultural organizations dedicated to preserving both Maltese and English literary expressions despite the challenges of a small market.

Malta's Publishing Ecosystem

Malta sustains a vibrant publishing community spanning established houses like Merlin Publishers and Midsea Books to innovative independents such as Kotba Calleja and Praspar Press. The National Book Council actively supports this ecosystem through strategic initiatives including the Malta Book Fund,

 

Despite challenges like rising production costs and limited market size, Maltese publishers continue producing over 540 titles annually, showcasing both contemporary voices and cultural heritage. This resilience and commitment to literary excellence make Malta an ideal inaugural focus for the Mediterranean Publishing Fellowship.
